Our Youth Fellowship (YF) is for young people aged between 13 and 16 and takes place in one of the upper rooms of the church which has now become known as the YF Room. The young people begin the evening with an ‘Ice Breaker’ and then study relevant topics over coffee and refreshments in the room which was specifically designed for them – complete with a coffee bar. Throughout the season guests would be invited along to discuss relevant social issues with the young people where we try to give them a forum for discussing issues in their lives and problems they may encounter.
Our Family Service takes place from 11.40am to 12.45pm. The first half is devoted to praise after which, at approximately 12.15pm, the children and young people leave the main hall for Children’s Church and Bible Class. About once a month, usually the third Sunday of each month, we have a combined Communion and Family Service which begins at 11.00am and last until approximately 12.15pm. During this, younger children of Primary School age leave and we have activities appropriate for their age group. Older children remain in that service.
On a typical Sunday the children who leave for Children’s Church meet in small groups in the upstairs rooms with each group allocated its own worker who is accompanied by a helper. Lessons vary from practical, craft-based lessons for the very young up to course studies relevant to the age range of the older children.
Regular attendees as well as the children of visitors are made very welcome and the workers ensure that visiting children are encouraged to participate in the group activities and discussion.
Silverbirch runs a supervised Creche for pre-school children during the second half of the Family Service and also as required during other services. The creche is equipped with toys, books, puzzles and art and craft materials. Although the creche is supervised by responsible members of the fellowship, parents are free to accompany their child if they so wish. The service is relayed through to the creche so that adults can hear what is going on in the Main Hall. The creche also has its own sink and toilet facilities. Visitors and ‘regulars’ alike are free to avail of these facilities.
Every Girl’s Rally (EGR)
Every Girl’s Rally or EGR is our uniformed organisation for girls. The season runs from September to March during which the girls are encouraged to participate in badge work, drill, practical activities and Bible activities. The minimum age is 5 and the upper age is 13. New members are always welcome.
Once a year EGR replaces our regular Family Service and the girls participate in the service. Prize night is the last night of the season where parents are invited along to a display by the girls and to see the presentation of cups and awards for achievement and performance throughout the year.
One Way Rally (OWR)
The One Way Rally (OWR) is Silverbirch’s children’s Bible Club for all children of Primary School age (5-11). It derives its name from the motto “One Way to Heaven – Jesus is the Way!” and this is the overriding theme of the club. Throughout the season the children are taught ‘Memory Verses’ from the Bible, they have lively quizzes, video nights, games nights, lively singing with a short epilogue to top off the evening.
The OWR is on Wednesday evenings (during term-time) starting at 6.45pm and finishing at 7.30pm. The children are encouraged to collect their points throughout the year for “Prize Night” at the end of the season. The objective of the OWR is to teach children of the Lord Jesus Christ and what He can do in their lives. If you have children at a loose end on a Wednesday evening, why not bring them along to the One Way Rally? We know they’ll love it!
Parents & Toddlers
Silverbirch’s Parents & Toddlers is one of the largest in Bangor and has plenty of room in the Sports Hall of the church to accommodate both the large numbers of children and the array of larger equipment such as the climbing frame and slide! We have plenty of toys and activities to keep the children occupied including a ‘craft time’ and a ‘singalong time’. The children are treated to juice and biscuits during the morning while the parents chat over a welcome cup of coffee. There are no lower or upper age restrictions on babies and toddlers – all are welcome!
There are a number of ‘specials’ during the year including a visit from Santa at Christmas time and a trip to The Ark Open Farm. Our Parents & Toddlers are members of “Early Years”, the organisation for young children and a number of independent reviews on the Web rate Silverbirch’s Parents & Toddlers as one of the best in the Bangor area.
